Earmark Reform
It takes some hard knocks to the heads of Republicans to “get” it that they need to stop spending and stop with the earmarks! House Republicans have a new website for Earmark Reform……
Earmark Reform – Stop the Earmarks. Fix Washington.
The spending habits of Congress – and pork-barrel earmarks, in particular – have become the clearest symbol of a broken Washington. With that in mind, House Republicans asked Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats to join them in supporting an immediate moratorium on all earmarks while a bipartisan select committee identifies ways to bring fundamental change to the way in which Washington spends taxpayers’money. The Majority’s response: no thanks. In spite of the Democrats’ refusal to change the way Washington spends taxpayer dollars, House Republicans have committed themselves to a series of standards that will be the basis of their comprehensive earmark reform efforts. This website is dedicated to those standards and what House Republicans are doing to fix Washington by stopping earmarks.
Now the Senate Republicans need to get on board the Earmark Reform Express. For any Representative or Senator running for office this year you should be asking if they have pledged for Earmark Reform. This isn’t just for Republicans, it’s for any legislator.
Go here to check the latest list of lawmakers supporting the Kingston-Wolf-Wamp earmark reform measure.

Guess it isn’t really “Children’s Health Care First”
The Senate just voted down Senator Tom Coburn’s amendment – The Children’s Health Care First Act. Apparently most Senators care more about pork or earmarks!
“The Children’s Health Care First Act,â€? that would have delayed funding for special interest pork projects until the Secretary of Health and Human Services certified that all children have health insurance. The Coburn amendment was defeated, or tabled, by a vote of 68 to 26. “The American people have heard a lot of chatter in Washington about who cares more about children’s health care. The fact is lawmakers in both parties agree that Congress has a moral obligation to care for those who are unable to care for themselves. Yet, when asked to sacrifice their own pork projects, Washington politicians of both parties chose to abandon children,â€?

Sen. DeMint’s letter to President on immigration laws
Senator James DeMint and 8 other Republican Senators sent a letter to President Bush last week which identified measures to secure and manage the US borders. All measures exist in current law!
Too bad Tennessee’s 2 Senators (Corker & Alexander) didn’t sign on to this letter! No instead, they’ve signed onto the Hutchinson Amendment which has the “touchback” feature. This is supposed to lull Tennesseans into thinking both Senators are concerned about the immigration bill? The way the situation stands today is a vote for cloture is a vote for the S.1348 Immigration bill. Any Republican Senator who votes yes for cloture is voting for the passage of S.1348 regardless if that Senator votes no on the actual bill S.1348. Here’s how it works – cloture will end debate to force a vote on S.1348. Cloture requires 60 votes to pass and the S.1348 bill vote requires 51 votes to pass. The pro immigrationists have the 51 votes, they don’t have 60 votes for cloture……YET. Just be sure to pay attention to how your Senator votes on cloture and remember if they are running for re-election in 2008. Now – get on the stick and contact your Senators to let them know you don’t want them to vote for either cloture or s.1348.
Here is the letter:
Border Security Can Be Implemented Without Senate BillJune 12th, 2007 – Today, nine U.S. Senators wrote a letter to President Bush urging him to fulfill the border security provisions listed in the Senate immigration bill whether the legislation passes or not. Each border security trigger in the bill can be implemented under current law without any need for new legislation from Congress. The text of the letter is below:
Dear Mr. President:
We respectfully ask that your Administration enforce the border security laws that have already been authorized by Congress regardless of whether the Senate passes the immigration reform bill. The bill assumes that several critical border security benchmarks can be achieved within 18 months. These security triggers are already authorized under current law and can be completed without the immigration bill. We believe these enforcement measures are vital and should not wait until Congress passes additional immigration reforms.
Securing the border is the best way to restore trust with the American people and facilitate future improvements of our immigration policy.
Sincerely,
U.S. Senators Jim DeMint (R – South Carolina), Tom Coburn (R – Oklahoma), Mike Enzi (R – Wyoming), David Vitter (R – Louisiana), Jim Inhofe (R – Oklahoma), Jim Bunning (R – Kentucky), Charles Grassley (R – Iowa), John Ensign (R – Nevada) and Jeff Sessions (R – Alabama).
###
The Senate immigration bill calls for the following security benchmarks to be completed as a “trigger before other parts of the bill go into effect. Bill proponents claim these provisions can be implemented within 18 months. All of them can be implemented under current law:
• Bill Trigger #1 – 18,000 agents border patrol agents;
— This is already scheduled under current law: Customs and Border Patrol Press Release 8/4/2006: “In May, President Bush announced his commitment to hire an additional 6,000 agents by the end of 2008, bringing the Border Patrol’s total strength to 18,000 agents.â€?• Bill Trigger #2 – 200 miles of vehicle barriers, 370 miles of fencing, and 70 ground-based radar and camera towers, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles;
— This requires less than is already required under current law. The Secure Fence Act, passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush in 2006, already requires 700 miles of two-layered reinforced fencing along Southwest border, mandates DHS achieve operational control over entire border through “virtual fenceâ€? that deploys cameras, ground sensors, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and integrated surveillance technology.• Bill Trigger #3 – End “catch and releaseâ€? and provide ICE 27,500 beds for immigration detainees;
— According to DHS, both of these triggers have already been accomplished. DHS Press Release 10/30/2006: “Ended ‘Catch-and-Release’ Along the Borders: In 2006, the Department of Homeland Security and ICE re-engineered the detention and removal process to end this practice along the border… ICE also increased its detention bed space by 6,300 during the fiscal year 2006, bringing the current number of funded beds to 27,500 immigration detainees.â€?• Bill Trigger #4 – Secure identification documents with photo and biometric information and operational employment verification system to determine work eligibility
— The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush in 2005, already requires secure identification documents with photo and biometric information.
— The Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2007, passed by Congress and signed into law in 2006, already provides $113 million to fully expand the Basic Pilot / Employment Eligibility Verification (EEV) system to be a national employment database.
Other Border Security Provisions of Current Law• Achieve and maintain operational control over the entire international land and maritime borders of the United States as required under the Secure Fence Act of 2006 (Public Law 109-367)
• Fully integrate all databases maintained by DHS which contain information on aliens as required by section 202 of the Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002 (8 U.S.C. 1722).
• Fully implement US-VISIT program to record the departure of every alien departing the United States and match records of departure with the records of arrivals in the United States as required by section 110 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (8 U.S.C. 1221 note).
• Enforce the provision of law that prevents States and localities from adopting “sanctuary” policies or that prevents State and local employees from communicating with DHS as required by section 642 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (8 U.S.C. 1373).
• Fully operational equipment at each port of entry and uses such equipment in a manner that allows unique biometric identifiers to be compared and visas, travel documents, passports, and other documents authenticated in accordance with section 303 of the Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002 (8 U.S.C. 1732).
• An alien with a border crossing card is prevented from entering the United States until the biometric identifier on the border crossing card is matched against the alien as required by section 101(a)(6) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(6)).
• Any alien who is likely to become a public charge is denied entry into the United States pursuant to section 212(a)(4) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1182(a)(4)).
Course I’m sure the Dhimmicrats and pro-amnesty Republicans in the Senate won’t let a few facts get in their way towards giving 12 to 20 million illegal aliens amnesty!

MA military supplier raided for hiring illegal aliens
So, Senators Kennedy and Kerry brought some of that military spending bacon home and this company received a contract probably based on their minority status being Hispanic likes to hire illegal aliens.
From The Stein Report:
“The owner and three managers of a New Bedford [Mass.] leather manufacturer that’s won more than $91 million in U.S. military contracts were arrested Tuesday for allegedly hiring illegal immigrants. The company, Michael Bianco Inc., hired illegal aliens as it tried to meet deadlines to supply backpacks and other products to the military, federal officials said in a court filing. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers raided the company Tuesday morning,” the AP reports. “In an affidavit, investigators claimed that owner Francesco Insolia, plant manager Dilia Costa, payroll manager Ana Figueroa and office manager Gloria Melo allowed an undercover officer who told them she was an illegal immigrant to continue working at the plant, and Figueroa advised her how to obtain a fake Social Security card.”
I’m wondering how many non-Hispanics are actually hired at this company. Oh yeah, if you read the full story this company is totally focused on hiring illegals. They also make leather goods for Coach Inc. and Timberline Co. I’d venture a guess that even if a non-Hispanic applied for a job at Michael Bianco Inc. they would not get the job.
Additional info update: My supposition that this employer was only hiring illegal aliens is correct. It’s estimated that 500 of the 580 employees will be deported. All are Hispanic. Michael Bianco Inc. hires illegals because they have less options and are more desperate, plus, working conditions are harsher with the illegals more willing to accept severe workplace conditions. Go here for the details and video.
Also, Rep. Marsha Blackburn has introduced legislation to prevent financial institutions from issuing credit cards to illegal aliens. I like the tag line from Blackburn on this one – “You can’t get a Visa, without a visa”!
The Photo Identification Security Act would require banks to use what Blackburn calls ’secure forms of identification’ to obtain credit. In a statement put out by her office, she says that Bank of America ‘has come under fire in response to reports that it allows illegal immigrants access to credit cards without proper documentation,’” the Memphis Commercial Appeal writes. “‘This bill closes a critical loophole that banking institutions have used to circumvent the letter of the law they have used to target illegal aliens as a new source of revenue. It says to banks and illegal immigrants alike, ‘You can’t get a Visa, without a visa,’” Blackburn said.

Color Me Shocked – Look See What Senator Frist is Going to Do on Border Security
Who even knew there was a “Rule 14″ which allows Frist to bypass the committee process to go directly to the floor for a vote. Why haven’t we seen this used before? Frist intends to basically strip Sen. Spector’s Immigration Reform bill of the Guest Worker Program (you know, the Gold Card program) to deal with border security specifically. Frist wants to begin debate by March 27th. What I found interesting was Sen. Brownback’s (he’s repeatedly talked about as a 2008 Presidential candidate) response:
During this morning’s Judiciary Committee meeting, Mr. Specter hinted that Mr. Frist would move ahead on his own if the committee didn’t arrive at some consensus. The prospect worried both Democrats and Republicans.
“I think it would be March madness to rush this,” Sen. Sam Brownback, Kansas Republican, said.
So Brownback thinks this would be rushing things huh? How flippin’ long do these do-nothing politicians need? It’s been a major issue for years now, how much more time do they need? Here’s the real issue, Brownback and most Senate politicians would rather bury their heads in the sand about illegal immigration. The lobbyists and special interests are working them real hard to pretend that border security isn’t an issue.
I truly hope that Senator Frist continues with this plan.
Update: 11:15amSpoke too soon on the shock factor. Heard this morning that Senator Frist’s border security plan does not include a real fence, he’s calling it a “virtual” fence! Huh! Lotta good a virtual fence will do.
I strongly urge you to contact Senator Frist to: 1) Find out the details of his plan for border security and 2) to show your support for his initiative to get the ball rolling and forget about the Guest Worker Program until the border security issue has been fixed.

Contract with America Renewed (circa 2006)
At the very least the House Republicans are starting to understand the discontent of their base. Otherwise I don’t think this would have occurred. Now it would be real nice (drawl sound) if the the Senate would wake up and smell the coffee before it’s too late. I’m talking about the Immigration reform bill!
If anything, as Congressmen Mike Pence and Jeb Hensarling point out in an open letter to the American people, today’s situation is much worse:
[W]e are once again at a historic crossroads in the nation?s future. Despite initial successes, Republicans today are confronted with familiar challenges: expanding government, a worsening fiscal position, and an explosive growth in earmarks. In fiscal year 2005, the federal government spent $2.47 trillion?49% more than it spent in fiscal year 1995 after adjusting for inflation. The deficit for the current fiscal year is projected to be upwards of $400 billion, the largest nominally in history. In 1995, the public debt limit stood at $4.9 trillion; it now stands at $8.2 trillion, up 67% and yet again in need of an increase. This is not the result of war and economic challenges, as is often claimed, but rather an unwillingness to make choices and trade offs.

Tx Rep Sam Johnson (Frmr POW) Rips Into Rep John Murtha for Anti Troops Statements
H/T On The Wire
From a speech given by Rep. Sam Johnson (Tx, Rep) at CPAC last Thursday and it’s about time!
“I do know what it’s like to be far from home, serving your country, risking your life and hearing that America doesn’t care about you,” Johnson said, choking back tears.
“[Hearing] your Congress doesn’t care about you. Your Congress just cut off all funding for your war. They’re packing up and going home and leaving you.” Johnson added he was “scared to death” by such talk because years ago, he was afraid he would be left in Vietnam “forever.”
“I know what it does to the mission,” said Johnson, “and so help me God, I will never, ever let our nation make those mistakes again.”
GOP Congressman and Former POW Rips John Murtha — 02/10/2006
Able Danger Comes Alive Again
The Pentagon has agreed to hearings on Able Danger which means Shaffer and Phillpott will be able to give testimony. It also means there are a few with the 911 Commission who are going to get very nervous, like Jamie Gorelick.
Weldon has singled out former 9/11 Commissioner Jamie Gorelick and commission staff member Dieter Snell as the main players behind the commission’s decision not to include Able Danger in its final report. When the national news media picked up on the story this summer, Weldon’s chief of staff, Russ Caso, received an unsolicited phone call from Gorelick in which she stated, “I did nothing wrong.”
“This is a scandal, I think, bigger than Watergate,” Weldon said last month.
Snell, a New York deputy attorney general, did not immediately respond to a phone call left at his office Wednesday. Gorelick referred questions to former 9/11 Commission spokesman Al Felzenberg, who denied Weldon’s allegation that the commission ignored Able Danger.

Colonel Kline Reports On Iraq
Back a couple weeks ago when Murtha started to spew his bile for the Democrat Party I wrote about MN Rep John Kline (Col. USMC Ret). Interestingly enough he was in Iraq at the time. John Hinderocker at Powerline Blog interviewed Col. Kline and he made some interesting comments especially considering Kline’s subdued demeanor.
Howard Dean’s casual comment that we can’t win is not just irresponsible, it really is a betrayal of the trust of our men and women in uniform. That’s what makes me so angry about Jack Murtha, more than any of the others, because he was a Vietnam vet, and he did serve many years in the Marine reserve and he ought to know better. Howard Dean, I just have so little regard for his opinion on anything, but he is the leader of the Democrat party, and for him to come out and say that is certainly irresponsible, but even more than that, I think it is harmful to our service men and women, it is a betrayal of their trust, it is very damaging to our allies.
Be sure to read John’s posting at Powerline. I think Col. Kline has quite abit more lucidity or sanity to his observations than Rep. John Murtha.
