Proposed Congressional Reform Act of 2010
This proposal originated somewhere via an email chain and then modified by Random Ruminations here. I think this would be a great project for the Tea Party Patriots to push push push!
The Congressional Reform Act of 2010
Thesis: Service in Congress is an honor and a duty, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, not career politicians. Elected representatives serve their term(s), then go home and go back to work like the rest of us.
1. Term Limits: 12 years only, one of the possible options below. a) Two 6-year Senate terms, b) six 2-year House terms, or c) one 6-year Senate term and 3 2-year House terms.2. No tenure/no pension: A congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.
3. Congress (past, present and future) participates in Social Security: All funds in the Congressional retirement fund moves to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, Congress participates with the American people.
4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan just as all Americans.
5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
7. Congress must equally abide in all laws they impose on the American people.
8. All contracts with past and present congressmen are void effective 1/1/11. The American people did not make this contract with congressmen, congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.

This would be a dream come true for sure! I sent this on to about 100 people!
These are good words and a great idea, but what’s the plan? sending it to 1,000,000 doesn’t make anything happen. What’s the plan? What can people do to make the reality?
I think 12 years of term is to long – I propose 2 – 4 year terms. I also ask, what is the plan? Am I now on some dumb hate crimes or terrorist watch? These guys are only in office to make money and see which way the wind blows. You have my email address – let me know what the plan is. How do we implement such a plan? How do we get a proposal of this nature on all the ballots in all states?
An excellent proposal, but how do we implement it? As David said “sending it to 1,000,000 doesn’t make anything happen”
so what is next?
I think the only thing to do is work through your Tea Party group. There’s the 912 Group, there’s Tea Party Nation, Liberty Alliance, Tax Day Tea Party – you need to go to the rallies, get involved in your local GOP party, become a precinct leader, primaries etc……it isn’t always about donating money. Time is a precious commodity and that’s where people are needed. Just remember, there’s a learning curve in dealing with the political sphere, it isn’t called a ‘blood game’ for nothing.
Great ideas. I would only ask those who support them to re-consider what often seem to be their “anti-socialist” stance. The ideas expressed by this congressional reform act are quintessentially socialist. Too often people mean “top-down anti-democratic elitist and centralized government-run” when they use the word “socialist”. However, to those of us who consider ourselves socialist, “socialism” means “grassroots democracy”–the antithesis of what the word has come to mean. We are witnessing Orwell’s “doublespeak”, where words have come to have their opposite meaning. At the very least, let’s not overlook common ground: if people carry placards with anti-”socialist” slogans written on them, they may be alienating real socialists, in whom they might find potential allies.
How can we get this enacted? There are many in agreement – but there is no link where we can go sign a petition or learn how to get personally involved in helping make this a reality. Such a great idea – but we need to put legs to this. Is any org out there trying to become a focal point for this, a place to connect and help get the ball rolling? So badly needed…..
I think this plan would definitely cause congress to stop and think more seriously about what they actually vote to put in place. HOWEVER I agree with those above who say “How does this actually happen?” I cannot send this to anyone until we have a way to participate in enacting it.
Reform won’t hapen with e-mails and words.
This could get passed, IF, enough ordinary citizens (patriots), not politicians, got elected for the explicit purpose of signing this into law and repealing the stupid amendments and laws that previous sessions have created. Then, maybe this country and our way of life may stand a chance of surviving. Our country is now so far gone, that taking this drastic a measure may be our only salvation. Our country must return to the constitution. Our country must be governed by givers, not takers.
