Just as they finish school Sikh officers go after military for ban of turbans

Isn’t that just too convenient. Just as these 2 officers who happen to be of the Sikh religion want to be able to keep their beards and wear a turban in uniform. And they’re blaming the recruiter who they say told them they would be able keep the beard and wear a turban. Seems to be when in doubt just blame a recruiter whether you have proof or not. If these 2 officers made it through dental and medical school they should be smart enough to know their demands aren’t going to fly!

Sikhs Want DoD Turban, Hair Bans Lifted

A Sikh civil rights and advocacy group is asking the Pentagon to drop its requirement that Sikh men doff their turbans and cut their beards and hair in order to serve in the military.

The Sikh Coalition is taking on the cause of two commissioned officers who are now in their last year of medical and dental school and slated to enter the Army’s Officers’ Leadership Basic Course in July.

If I had a dollar for every time someone in boot camp said ‘But Sarge, the recruiter said…” I’d be a rich woman. Read your contracts folks. If it’s not in there…your out of luck. And you’re exactly correct in pointing out that commissioned officers are not newbie recruits. They’ve had plenty of time to fuss. Now they’ve got their education and maybe a general discharge. What’s the downside for them at this point? None. We should sue them for the cost of their education along with court and lawyers fees to recover.

I’ll have to disagree here. The Sikhs have a legitimate reason to want to keep the turban. They do not claim allegiance to a particular nation by wearing it. Here’s a little history:

The First and Second World Wars

During the First World War, Sikh battalions fought in Egypt, Palestine, Mesopotamia, Gallipoli and France. Six battalions of the Sikh Regiment were raised in the World War II, and served at El Alamein and in Burma, Italy and Iraq, winning 27 battle honours.
“In the last two world wars 83,005 turban wearing Sikh soldiers were killed and 109,045 were wounded. They all died or were wounded for the freedom of Britain and the world, and during shell fire, with no other protection but the turban, the symbol of their faith.”
    General Sir Frank Messervy

The turban is like a medal that a Catholic might wear to battle.
