1936 Stainless Steel Ford Coupe

Not my usual interest but I got this email from a friend of my Father’s and thought this car was so unusual and cool looking. Plus, I needed a break from politics! Imagine having a stainless steel car! I’d never heard of it before (not that I’m exactly up on classic autos to be sure).

Email I received:

This is the 1936 Ford Coupe built for and owned by Allegheny Ludlum Steel. It was attending our open house and then was featured in a local parade with over 100 of our salaried, hourly and retired employees walking alongside. This is 1 of only 4 in existence and is the only one currently in running & in roadworthy condition. The car is in exceptional condition, with the interior and even the frame looking great. All 4 cars each had over 200,000 miles on them before they removed them from service. These cars were built for Allegheny as promotional and marketing projects. The top salesmen each year were given the honor of being able to drive them for one year. The v-8 engine (max 85 hp) ran like a sewing machine and was surprisingly smooth and quite. I thought this was a much better looking automobile than the Ford Thunderbird that visited us last year. FYI, the car was insured (we were told) for the trip to Louisville via covered trailer for 1.5 million dollars. We were also told that the dies were ruined by stamping the stainless car parts, making these the last of these cars ever produced.

More information of the history on these automobiles can be found at Allegheny Ludlum’s website

    An incredible story.

The owner of the fourth and only privately held ‘36 Stainless Ford Coupe just left my office, as I am designing a garage for it.

The car is currently being restored in Arizona and has full matching numbers.

Where can one see this, or one like it, car in person?

    Great car thanks

I live in Arizona. Would it possible to see this vehicle?

I would appreciate knowing which Ford plant produced these 4 or 6 autos.

  • Henry Hecky says:

I believe this car is a tudor sedan, not a coupe – - -a coupe had no rear seat and usually had a rumbleseat behind the rear window (with no roof) – -

  • William Beckwith says:

You are right it is a Tudor. The coupes were either a 3 Window or a 5 Window Coupe or a convertible.

As I work with my client, I hope to learn more about his car and have been promised a ride in it. He purchased it from a dentist’s estate. The Chicago dentist was famous for shiny metallic caps, long before rappers had “grilles.” It sat for many years after his death in a suburban Chicago garage. It took my client, ironically a Chevy Dealer, to recognize the uniqueness. As an annual patron of the Barrett Jackson, I suspect in my lifetime, we will all see this car on the block. Probably a great place for the world to see it and its mohair seats.

hello. I work for a company that specializes in placing cars in movies, television, etc. I was wondering if you had contact information for the owner of this car. Or could put me in contact and any capacity, would be so greatly appreciated…thanks! shannon

  • The story about stainless steel automobiles is a candidate for the Of Material Interest feature of our magazine, Advanced Materials & Processes (AMP). AMP is the membership magazine for ASM International, a professional society for materials scientists and engineers, and has a worldwide circulation of about 38,000 (not including online readers). Many of our readers are affiliated with the automotive industry or work with stainless and would find this very interesting.

Would it be possible to send me jpg or tif files of the above images? The preferred resolution is 300 dpi. When you send the images, please include credit details.

Thank you for your assistance. Please email me if you have any questions.

I saw one of these cars last week at the Hershey judged car show in Pa. The owner has an Arizona address, so it looks like the vehicle mentioned earlier is now on display. It certainly appeared fresh and was polished to appear like chrome. What a beauty!

  • Jim Pavlecic says:

Yes, Sam, the Hershey judged car is the same. My client sold it during the 2400 hour restoration project.

I happen to know a guy in AZ that owns one of these cars. He is a very quiet guy and does not want to be bothered but I have seen his, in his garage and it is beautiful!!
