Tn Representative Jim Cooper protected from computer crime?
Why would a Congressman be immune from committing a crime?
The Nashville Democrat was accused this week by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association of breaking the law when he used a password he said was given him to access a members-only association Web site and download documents.
Cooper showed and discussed the documents during a hearing on problems within the electric cooperative industry held by the House Government Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Thursday. The documents, he said, included legal advice given by the trade group to member utilities.
snip…..Stanley Brand, former legal counsel to the U.S. House, said the Constitution gives members of Congress broad immunity when conducting legislative business.
“I think he’s got a good case for immunity,” Brand said. The U.S. Justice Department’s Web site states that the protection provided to “legislative acts” by the Speech and Debate Clause provides members with “absolute immunity” from criminal and civil litigation.
Another law made by Congress to protect Congress! This is the same law that has protected legislators from drunk driving into barriers near the Capitol.
Is this the ethics of Jim Cooper?

ARE ELITIST ABOVE THE LAW? By Gerard Donovan, Congressional Candidate for Tennessee’s 5th District
Several weeks ago it was announced that Congressman Jim Cooper was under investigation by the FBI for illegally accessing a restricted website. Now we have not heard from the FBI that he is or isn’t being investigated, as they have refused to answer requests for an interview by the press. So we have to give Mr. Cooper the benefit of the doubt. But he did admit during a hearing on the hill that he, himself, accessed the website after being refused his request to access specific information.
Jim Cooper has been in Congress for a number of years and quite frankly we deserve better. We deserve honest representation that honors the constitution. The federal government of the United States is not made up of a bunch of “Storm Troopers and when they barge into our home or our business without proper authorization we should be concerned, as we deserve better.
If you are concerned that our rights are being eroded and our way of life is being jeopardized by career politicians and the political elite I encourage you to get involved in a grassroots initiative. An initiative that would send a clear signal to the political elite that we deserve better and we demand excellence in government and that we no longer are going to accept this type of representation. The elite and career politicians are not above the law, they are not better than you and I and they need to be held accountable.
Current congressional approval ratings are at 18%, it is not surprising considering the antics that go on in Washington. Instead of being deceitful and devious our leaders should be trying to fix the economic woes of America. Instead of being deceitful and devious our leaders should be trying to repair our borders. Instead of being deceitful and devious our leaders should be trying to secure the American Dream for future generations. We deserve better and we should now demand it.
