Achhh! My own stupidity….
Have you ever done something so abjectly stupid you wanted to slap the back of your own head! That’s what I did yesterday.
My laptop has been crashing on me regularly for the last 3 months. I’ve reformatted the drive twice now. Once on the phone with the bleepin’ Compac/HP help desk and another time a couple weeks ago with a friend. Said friend kept telling me it was probably my memory card and I thought he was right.
So I decided to look at the memory cards on my laptop. I opened up the back and was going to remove one of the cards. This is where the total abject stupidity comes in…. I couldn’t get the card out so I went and got a needle nose pliers. Yep, not too smart. I used the pliers to try and pry the card out of it’s slot. Guess what? I now have half the memory I used to have.
At that point or after I closed everything up and rebooted my machine I decided to find out how to remove the card. I didn’t know at this point I’d destroyed the card. I’m doing a search and midpoint I get this out of memory warning….d’oh. What’s going on? I check my system info and find out I’ve lost half my memory. I then find out to install the card you have to install at a 90 degree angle. So, I assume to remove it would be the same.
I’ve ordered additional memory and am operating at a significantly reduced memory capacity. I know better than to do something this dumb but I did it anyway. Lesson learned, at least I hope so.

While satisfying in the short term, brute force computer repair is usually counterproductive. I know this from vast personal experience.

We have ALL done this type of thing.
Several years ago, there was a series of commercials showing people doing things they knew better than to do - I never reember what it was for, just that I suffered along with these people.
