Technology pumps new life into Prudhoe Bay - Innovative drilling methods squeeze more oil than expected at Alaska field

PRUDHOE BAY, ALASKA — The future of North America’s most prolific oil field is riding at the end of a 6-mile-long flexible drill bit winding its way underneath the Alaskan tundra.

The equipment, known as a coiled tubing drill, can carve a path through the strata in nearly any direction, snaking into small pockets of oil that earlier drilling may have missed.

It then can be drawn out like a milkshake slurped through a straw.

The technology is so successful that Dave Hildreth,a well site leader for oil giant BP who runs the rig, is constantly fielding requests from project geologists in Anchorage. They ask him to make the bit take one sharp turn after another to explore other spots that seismic charts show have potential.

snip……Prudhoe Bay was originally expected to produce about 9 billion barrels of oil when it started sending crude south to the lower 48 in 1977. At that rate it should have been tapped out by 1997, but today it has topped the 11 billion barrel mark and looks to have billions of barrels to go thanks to the new technologies.

Today Alaska’s North Slope, including Prudhoe Bay, produces about 700,000 barrels per day. That’s about 14 percent of U.S. crude output and about 3 percent of the country’s demand.

Because of dirt people (those who bow at the altar of enviromentalism) the US isn’t allowing any drilling for oil on a minute piece of land in ANWAR, nor offshore drilling on our coasts while China is drilling oil for Cuba about 50 miles off the Florida coast. With this technology China is probably drilling right up to America’s coastline. If not for people believing and buying into the dirt people’s junk science scam the US could be much closer to oil independence with the need for Middle Eastern oil relieved. Middle Eastern oil is what has fueled the growth and strength of radical Islam.

The myth of the US running out of oil is no different than the myth’s of Rachel Carson’s global cooling of the 1970’s.

The US is not being held hostage by Middle Eastern oil or radical Islam, it is being held hostage by the dirt people and the junk scientists who support their claims.
