Not Welcome in Oakland
The more things change the more they seem the same. Marines are refused entry to the terminal at the Oakland airport.
From Michael Ledeen at The Corner - Spitting on the Marines
On September 27th 204 Marines and soldiers who were returning from Iraq were not allowed into the passenger terminal at Oakland International Airport. Instead they had to deplane about 400 yards away from the terminal where the extra baggage trailers were located.snip….It felt like being spit on. Every Marine and soldier felt the message loud and clear, “YOU ARE NOT WELCOME IN OAKLAND!”
But don’t ever accuse the anti-war idiots of not supporting the troops.

[…] "Welcome Home" That was, maybe still is, a greeting when a Vietnam vet met up with another VV. Now I guess it depends on where a vet lives as to whether they’ll hear those words. Well, I wonder if soldiers are welcome at the Oakland A’s games or the amusement parks, restaurants, stores etc. perhaps a boycott of those would get a message through to the folks in Oakland and SanFrancisco. We appreciate the troops!

I was with cbmu 301 bravo 26th rein. 3rd mar. div. 1967-68 . a year of combat on the dmz khe sanh , dong ha ,qua viet , the hills etc . when we came home we were considered something you would not want to step in and get on your shoe. I sure remember the plane ride home and I got lucky I didn’t have to fly into a commerical airport so I didn’t get jeered or spit on . some did . 3 years ago I was with a group of disabled viet vets going to the wall on a contintal flight out of dallas when I got into a conversation with a stu about the group . a half an hour later the movie stoped and the pilot came on the intercom telling the whole plane who was on board , the whole plane broke into applause and cheers ! It was great ! , just 36 years late . I can’t tell you what it meant but you can be sure there wasn’t a dry eye in the group ! I travel a lot and I thank and salute and applaude EVERY G I I see in uniform . I will never use oakland air port agin . CARRY ON !
