Running NYC Marathon for Wounded Warrior Project
From Captain Mike Erwin:
It seems fitting that I am sending out this email on the anniversary of the worst day in American history. Upon returning from my 8 month rotation to Afghanistan in April, I entered the lottery for a chance to run in the New York City Marathon. In June, I found out that I was one of the lucky ones, so I’ll be running 26.2 miles on November 4th.Having been deployed for 20 of the past 42 months, I have had the honor to serve with some of the bravest people you could ever hope to meet. All of us soldiers have made sacrifices in Iraq and Afghanistan…..but then there are some who have sacrificed much more than just time at home with family and friends: they have paid with their life, limbs or health.
As soon as I started training in June, I decided I would run for a charity that is near and dear to me, The Wounded Warrior Project. Over the past 4 years, I have worked with over a dozen soldiers who have been seriously wounded in combat who benefited from the WWP. Not only does this organization help soldiers immediately upon their return to the U.S., but they stick with our nation’s wounded warriors and help them carry on with life—often without eyesight, both legs or arms.
Those who know me understand that I am very passionate about some things in life….and honoring those who have sacrificed for our country is certainly one of those things. I am asking that you show your appreciation for our country’s wounded warriors by making a financial sacrifice of your own. I also am requesting that you send this flier to a select group of people that you are close with and encourage them to support the WWP, as well. Thank you for your support and may God continue to bless our great nation and those who serve and protect it
.
