The Battle for Baqubah

Michael Yon’s latest.  Arrowhead Ripper: Surrender or Die

The combat in Baqubah should soon reach a peak. Al Qaeda seems to have been effectively isolated. The initial attack on 19 June achieved enough surprise that al Qaeda was caught off guard and trapped. They have been beaten back mostly into pockets and are surrounded and will be dealt with. Part of this is actually due to the capability of Strykers. We were able to “attack from the march. In other words, a huge force drove in from places like Baghdad and quickly locked down Baqubah.

Once again, Yon tells the good and the bad. Looks like our warriors are doing what needs to be done. But support for embeds is lacking in communication facilities and other time consuming details.

Go.Read.

Remember, Michael Yon depends on the generosity of his readers to continue his reporting of the Good and the Bad.

One Response to “The Battle for Baqubah”

“I am not persuaded that another surge of troops into Baghdad for the purposes of suppressing this communitarian violence, this civil war, will work. The current active army is not large enough and the marine corps is not large enough for the kinds of missions they are being asked to perform” – Former Secretary of State, General Colin Powell

Powell also said US troops should not act as policemen. He described the US army as “about broken”, with a shortage of equipment, officers going on repetitive tours and gaps in military coverage elsewhere in the world.

And this assesment from Powell is now 7 months old.
