Guess there isn’t a need for all of those AgJobs

According to this – Citrus freeze leaves thousands jobless there isn’t a need to push through the AgJobs bill in the Senate for at least 2 years. (S237) According to what I heard the trees are damaged and it will be a couple years for recovery.

The deep freeze that has destroyed some $1 billion worth of California citrus could also mean months of unemployment for thousands of farmworkers, packers and truck drivers during what is already a lean season for those who work in agriculture, industry officials say.

Notice this story says what is already a lean season. Hmm, that’s not what we keep hearing from the pro-guest worker proponents.

The US doesn’t need a guest worker program. It needs to fix it’s immigration system and policies along with enforcing immigration laws.

As it is I suppose we the taxpayers will now pay for California citrus growers and pay for the higher costs of citrus at the market.  I wonder what all of those illegal alien farm workers will do now?  Go back to Mexico or Central America?  I doubt it, they’ll go on taxpayer assistance (if they aren’t on it already) so we’ll pay there again.

Think this will make a difference with the Senate?  Nope, I don’t either.

Update Thursday, Jan. 18th – Didn’t have to wait long for this one.

From Stein Report:

“The deep freeze that has destroyed some $1 billion worth of California citrus could also mean months of unemployment for thousands of farmworkers, packers and truck drivers during what is already a lean season for those who work in agriculture, industry officials say,” the AP reports. “Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said the state would offer assistance to all affected laborers, regardless of their immigration status. ”Everyone will get help,” he said Tuesday. ‘We are not here collecting immigration statuses.’ The governor’s press secretary, Aaron McLear, elaborated on Schwarzenegger’s comment Wednesday, saying the promised assistance for illegal immigrants included food programs, temporary housing, low-income energy assistance and other social services — but not unemployment insurance.”
