FEMA renamed by Senate-USEMA….sounds like?
How asinine is this? Rename a Federal agency where the acronym sounds like Osama! Aside from that imbicilic message, how much will it cost the agency to enact this name change? Forms? Uniforms? Letterhead? etc….. Guessing how bureaucrats operate it wouldn’t surprise me if the dollars ended up in the hundreds of millions.
It was a vote of 87 - 11 to approve the amendment worked out by Trent Lott and Susan Collins.
I feel ever so much better knowing that a name change will turn FEMA into an effective bureaucracy. Right?
This is a part of the DHS spending bill. It now goes to the House. Let’s hope the House of Representatives have a bit more common sense regarding this. I won’t hold my breath though.
Senate affirms FEMA revamp - The Clarion-Ledger
Added note - July 16: Notr from RofaSix commented on his thought about bureaucracies and how to deal with failed management:
It’s the 3 envelope system of management that we all learned in the DoD Program Management Course. It goes:
When your organization has failed follow the three envelope system of fixing what is broke.
Open envelope #1 and it says - blame it all on the guys before you. If that doesn’t help, open envelope #2 and it says - Reorganize and rename your organization… and after all that is said and done … and you are still a failed organization open envelope #3 which says - PREPARE 3 MORE ENVELOPES!

I reserve a special dislike for name changes in organizations. Someone saw a reason for the original name, and all a name change accomplishes is racking up costs in new letterhead, signage, “educating” consumers, publishing new directories, ad infinitum.
They usually justify name changes with “It more accurately describes our mission”. Well, everyone already knows what you do, under whatever name, and now you’re going to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars just so you can call yourselves by a new name that masturbates your ego with a better stroke.
Wouldnt want those six figures to actually contribute to your mission, now, would we?
