Katy, there are some who look and hope for such situations to prove their ideological point; that is, the military is bad and Bush is badder.

My husband, as you probably know, served in Iraq for a year during the start of the war with the 82nd ABN DIV. Insurgents/terrorists (and at that time Baathists) would booby trap civilians and blame it on the US troops to sway public opinion against the US. This was routinely done. If you remember Fallujah of Nov. 2005, insurgents slaughtered men, women and children and the media picked up on it as possible Marine atrocities. Turns out, of course, it was a ploy. Terrorists know that there are 2 wars being waged here: 1), a war of military might. They've already lost that. 2) a Public Relations war. On that, they are making headway, largely in part to Democrats and irresponsible political and social rhetoric.

Heres' a blog called Blue Star Chronicles that lists some questionable points about the Haditha incident:

I have wondered why so many are quick to assume the worse about our soldiers. Have they forgotten that terrorists hide amongst the innocent. Have people already forgotten 9/11, where so many innocent people were killed? What happened to innocent until proven guilty....especially for our own people?
