Ohhh….I’m Just Waiting With Bated Breath For President Bush’s Address To The Country On Immigration

Filed under: Politics, BlogBursts/Blog Memes, Illegal Immigration — Toni @ 12:01 am

I tuned into Fox News Sunday, on the topic of illegal aliens the only panelist who even remotely "gets" how the majority of Americans think is Brit Hume.  William Krystal is so disassociated with us common folk he thinks President Bush putting troops on the border will be enough to placate the base to accept an amnesty program.

I'm expecting not to be disappointed with President Bush's speech.  I think we'll hear about a temporary placement of troops on the border as a placebo.  Then we're going to hear about all these hard working "undocumented immigrants" who deserve to be legalized (snort snort…given amnesty) because they do the jobs that no American will do.  He'll bring up the low unemployment rate as a validation for amnesty.  He'll talk about how they will have to wait in line to become citizens.   He'll tallk about how we are a compassionate people and a nation of laws.  Except for the troops to the border most of his speech will be his standard fare on illegal aliens.

If putting the National Guard on the border was a temporary measure WHILE a border fence of substance was being built then I think it's a good idea.  Otherwise this is an empty political gesture.  There's a number of levels of concern surrounding illegal aliens - national security, culture and costs.  I have a friend who moved to San Antonio a couple years back for family reasons.  She had a difficult time finding a job as an executive assistant because she wasn't bilingual in English and Spanish.  If you read Victor Davis Hanson's "Mexifornia" he details the changes in the Mexican migration since the 1980's.  The effort at assimilation is disappearing along with the need to speak English.  Multiculturalism has promoted the Balkanization of the United States.

If our politicians were serious about controlling this invasion by illegal aliens they would have been utilizing existing laws.  But since illegals have become so bold as to demand the same rights as citizens they've opened Pandora's box.  They've raised the ire and sensibilities of the American people who have finally started to wake up to what has happened to their country.  They've been invaded!

Can you imagine what will happen when this amnesty is passed?  I'm not just talking about the instant flood to the borders which won't be stopped by any "Virtual" fence.  I'm talking about how will all of these people get processed, I'm also talking about how demoralizing this will be to all those law abiding people from other countries who have been waiting for years for legal permanent status.  All I hear about is the addition of border patrol agents, I hear nothing about the bureaucracy required to manage this behemoth.  Just how much funding will this take?  I hear Democrats wailing about the deficit and cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but I doubt we'll hear anything about the additional costs for this amnesty.

Dr. Demarche (formerly of The Daily Demarche) and now with American Future, has more than one excellent postings on this subject.  His "Visiting Permanently" and Other Things I Don't Understand hits the target and should be read by President Bush.

Here's a bit of his take on the situation:

Finally, how in the world are we going to pay for these reforms? All of this, from identifying who belongs to which category of illegal alien to interviewing them and adjudicating their cases, from levying fines to collecting taxes is going to be costly. I can't imagine there won't be an appeals process, and of course there is the matter of fraud investigation. The sheer number of man hours involved is staggering, not to mention the infrastructure needs. At least one, if not several, new layers of bureaucracy are going to have to be created to deal with this issue, and if there is one thing I have learned in Washington it is this: once new turf is created it can never be destroyed. Any government jobs created to deal with regularizing illegal immigrants will be with us for the long haul. I suppose at least one segment of the general population will benefit from this—immigration lawyers; you can rest assured that the minute a reform bill is signed into law the media will be saturated with advertisements for services to help illegals find a loophole in the system, and there will be many, but I digress.

I would love to be pleasantly surprised with President Bush's speech but I think the chances of that are slim to none.

Update 7:35pm:  Sooooo……no disappointments here.  Watched the President give his speech, blah, blah, blah.  Exactly what I expected although I was hoping for some new revelation by President Bush.  Like I said, no disappointments.  Got O'Reilly on now and he's talking about the illegals going to the back of the "virtual" line.  They won't be going to the back of any flippin' line, they will go to the front of the line.  And those who have been waiting for 10 years will get shoved even further into the black void of bureaucracy.

  1. You know, it never fails to astound me how the echo-chamber of DC distorts the voice of the people so badly. It might be a good thing that Senators rarely make it into the Oval Office and 2 terms is the extent of power.

  2. I agree that we simply aren’t enforcing the laws we have.

And it seems rather obvious that if the labor market in this country depends on migrant visas from Latin American countries, then why not allow for more such visas rather than create an ‘amnesty’ program?

Military troops and armed/fenced borders just reeks of failure on every level.

  3. I won’t watch, because I’m sure my BP would rise intolerably. It’ll be smoke and mirrors to make some think they are actually going to do something. Anything to get them past next elections. The GOP is going to suffer dearly the next two elections. They will try to blame that on everyone but their own elitist, myopic policies.

  4. I couldn’t watch it - I knew I’d be screaming at the television. I can’t believe this is the same President who has gone in to clean up the Middle East. It’s like he’s got two personalities or something.
